If you are a woman in 2016 still relying on your husband to provide everything for you even upto your toothbrush and toothpaste ... well, good luck to you.
Most sensible men today don't want any form of financial burden on them. Observe the emphasis on the word sensible. They seem to have no issues spending lavishly during the courting phase but believe me all that doesnt last forever.
It gets to a point in a girls' life when you have to look in the mirror and ask yourself, "what can i offer in this union rather than what can this union offer me" lol
Professionally, I have an MSc degree in Petroleum Engineering, BEng in Electronics & Communications Engineering and have practiced and worked in both industries, Even running my own business: www.snipnstylehq.com, one thing I have observed in my career development thus far is that a lot of men and women don't get it right from day one. I myself am not perfect, have made my own share of mistakes too.
"The success / failure of a home lies in the palm of a woman"..errrr I think this statement is sexist and untrue. I believe however that women carry a lot of societal burden on them in Africa, the expectations are just too high. Our men from a tender formative age, are brought up to believe that they don't need to make a conscious effort to contribute to the success of their home and in fact they are entitled to a clean home, cooked 3 course meals, a massage, pedicure and manicure, you name it.
That being said, judging from the fact that the woman is undoubtedly excellent in multitasking, let us focus on the career woman,
Being a career woman doesn't necessarily mean working for an organisation, a career woman can also be an entrepreneur. Your pen & diary remains your closest pal for you to remain sane. Organize your life, your time. When i newly got married , it all seemed daunting, but i got the hang of it with time, it takes practice.
-Cooking -Children Hangout -Manicure/Pedicure
-Cleaning -Children one-on-one sessions -School run
-Workout -Office work / Client Followup -P.T.A Meetings
-Bible classes -Picnics
Looking at the list above, one would wonder, so what exactly is the role of the man in the family? ... the answer will be provided on another day on perhaps another blog. I feel in Nigeria, the 2 toughest places to work as a working mum are in the Bank & Oil and Gas servicing industries. It gets worse when you live far away from your place of work. Since the main means of transport remains by car, the traffic is nothing to right home about and can take 50% of your constructive time to get over.
I have learned that effective planning is the way forward while maintaining a calm outlook, fit physique and happy disposition. One thing is for sure, whether working in the field, office or from home, it is recommended for every woman to have some sort of financial independence irrespective of how little income may seem to be at first to support herself and family. This is why I feel sorry for parents who do not see the need to invest in their female children, at the end of the day, these girls become tomorrows women raising a generation of short sighted leaders who turn around to bite us.
I am a strong believer of financial independence and a stronger believer that a woman must respect her husband, that is of course if you don't want to lose your marriage :) and the men too must love and appreciate their wives in return . Upbringing and self development has led me to believe that by faith and determination, I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me, If I can trust me you can too. In all remember not to ignore your husband no matter how busy you may get, go through the family planning section (http://beingmaami.blogspot.com/p/family-planning.html) for knowledge of how to get the best of both worlds.
